Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. - Tyler Jones made his first start of his NCAA Division I career, pitching five scoreless innings as No. 20 LSU defeated I-10 rival New Orleans 13-0 on Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium.
Jones was the first of five LSU (4-0) pitchers to keep UNO (1-3) off the scoreboard for the length of the game. The shutout was the first of the Privateers since an 8-0 loss at Middle Tennessee on May 14, 2010.
Offensively, Raph Rhymes went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead LSU with Alex Edward adding a 2-for-2 performance with two runs and an RBI. The Tigers totaled 14 hits in the contest.
The Privateers were held to four hits with Chris Geronimo, Nolan Church, Brandon Simon and Blake LeBlanc all contributing one.
UNO starter Garrett Manning (0-1) allowed 12 runs - eight earned - on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Coby Landry and Tyler Sanders each held the Tigers off the scoreboard out of the bullpen for head coach Bruce Peddie's squad. Landry pitched 1 1/3 innings with Sanders striking out two during his lone inning of work.
LSU scored six runs in the first inning, becoming the second straight opponent to jump on UNO early. Southern led 8-1 after a single inning on Sunday in the Privateers' last trip to Baton Rouge.
The Tigers added two runs in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and their final tally in the seventh.
The Privateers will take to the field this weekend at the Northwestern State Demon Invitational, beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the host Demons. UNO joins NSU, ULM and Stephen F. Austin in the three-day round robin event.
