Late Grand Slam Leads Warhawks Past Privateers

Box Score NATCHITOCHES, La. - ULM broke open a close game in the seventh inning on a grand slam by Matt Laird on way to a 10-5 victory over the University of New Orleans at the Northwestern State Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Laird's blast off of UNO (1-5) reliever Coby Landry was his lone hit in four appearances at the plate, but did enough damage for ULM (3-4), who led 5-3 at that point.

The Warhawks totaled 14 hits in the game of off the Privateer pitching in support of starter Randy Zeigler (1-0). The right-handed pitcher allowed four runs on 10 hits in seven innings on the mound, striking out five.

Corben Geren led ULM with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, scoring a run and picking up an RBI. Caleb Flowers, Jordy Poche and Caleb Flowers joined Geren with multiple hit games as the Warhawks' No. 3 through No. 6 hitters in the lineup combined to go 9-for-19 with six runs and four RBIs.

Tyler Sanders (0-1) took the loss for UNO in his first start in two years. The right-handed pitcher allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits over five innings.

The Privateers trailed ULM 3-0 before Nolan Church hit a three-run home run off of Ziegler in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score. Earlier in the game, Church extended his hitting streak to nine games with a first inning single on way to a 2-for-5 outing.

Chris Geronimo led UNO by going 4-for-5, including a pair of RBI singles that provided the Privateers with a run apiece in the seventh and ninth inning.

Andrew Garcia and Blake LeBlanc had two hits apiece for a UNO squad that tallied 12 in the game. LeBlanc scored two runs in the contest, each time on Geronimo's singles.

UNO will conclude its weekend at NSU with an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday morning against Stephen F. Austin. SFA defeated ULM on Friday afternoon and was scheduled to play the host Demons on Saturday night.
