Box Score NEW ORLEANS - No. 22 Tulane rallied from behind with two runs over the final two innings for a 7-6 win over the University of New Orleans on Sunday afternoon at Turchin Stadium in the final contest of a three-game series.
Bowen Woodson factored into both late runs, including the game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning that broke a 6-all tie and scored Tulane (16-4) catcher Blake Crohan for the walk-off victory over UNO (1-18). An inning earlier, Woodson scored the game-tying run on a Quinn Pippin single.
Crohan was the top hitter for the Green Wave, batting 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. Pippin and Jeremy Scahaffer added two additional hits for a TU squad that was outhit 12-11 by the Privateers.
UNO led in a game for the sixth time this year when they scored two runs in the first off Green Wave starter Robby Broach. Three consecutive hits to lead off the game included a Nolan Church RBI single to score Blake LeBlanc with Michael Tedesco hitting a sacrifice fly to score Beau Boudreaux late in the frame.
TU scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at two before the Privateers erupted for their biggest inning of the season with four runs in the second inning.
For the second straight inning, UNO put three straight hits together to lead off a frame. Andrew Garcia doubled home Cameron Wheeless, who led off the inning with a double. Chris Geronimo singled home Garcia with Geronimo scoring later on a Boudreaux double, that ended the day for Broach.
Broach finished the game by allowing six runs – all earned – on seven hits while facing 11 opposing batters in 1 2/3 innings.
With Broach out of the game, the Green Wave bullpen did a masterful job of keeping UNO off the scoreboard. Andrew Garner, Drew Zizinia, Alex Facundus and Nick Pepitone (3-0) combined to throw 7 1/3 inning of scoreless relief, allowing five hits and striking out eight.
Pepitone earned the win after striking out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning for the second straight contest.
TU scored a pair of runs in the fourth with a single run in the fifth to set up the last two innings of dramatic offense for the hosts.
Church (0-1) took the loss for the Privateers in his second appearance on the mound this season. The senior allowed one run on a single hit, while walking two in the final 2/3 inning of the game.
Church also was one of five UNO hitters with at least two hits, going 2-for-5 in the game with two RBIs. Boudreaux, Wheeless and Garcia were the other Privateers with two hits with Boudreaux accounting for two runs scored with the other two contributing a run apiece.
Privateer starter Zach Kelt went six innings, allowing hit runs on eight hits, while walking two. Coby Landry threw a scoreless seventh inning before Scott Stonestreet yielded the game-tying run in the eighth, his lone inning of work.
UNO will return to the road this coming Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest at Southeastern Louisiana, the first game between the two teams since 2005. SLU is 13-7 on the season after ending a three-game losing skid with a Sunday afternoon win over McNeese State.
