HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the second straight game, a big inning dictated the outcome as No. 25 Southern Miss defeated the University of New Orleans 14-1 on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

Like Friday's nine-run fifth inning, USM (29-5) was able to take advantage of defensive miscues by UNO (3-31) to explode offensively. The Golden Eagles jumped on the Privateers for seven runs in the first inning with five of the scores coming unearned following one of three UNO errors for the game.

The big inning by USM chased Privateer starter Robert Ormsbee after 2/3 of inning. The left-handed pitcher yielded six runs – two earned – on four hits before being replaced by Garrett Manning.

After the opening frame, the Golden Eagles were kept quiet by efforts of Manning and Corey Laudermill. Manning allowed two hits in 3 1/3 innings before Laudermill held USM without a hit over three innings.

In the meantime, the Privateers scored a run in the seventh inning when Zach Pohto scored on a Cameron Wheeless single. Wheeless was 2-for-4 in the game and accounted for one-third of UNO's six hits.

Following the lone UNO tally, the Golden Eagles put together another seven-run inning in the bottom of the eighth. A Privateer error in the frame allowed three of the runs to be unearned for USM.

Geoffrey Thomas (7-2) took the win for the hosts, allowing five runs over six innings while striking out five. The Privateers scored their one run off of Jackson Posey, who was relieved by Seth Hester and Matt Warren who pitched a scoreless frame apiece.

Tyler Koelling was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs to lead the Golden Eagles, who also received a 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs from Jared Bales.

The series is set to conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats, audio and video will be provided on SouthernMiss.com.
