NEW ORLEANS – Nicholls defeated the University of New Orleans 10-2 on Tuesday night at Maestri Field.
The loss spoiled the return home for a UNO (3-33) team that was playing its first contest on the Lakefront since Feb. 19. The Privateers played 33 games on the road between home contests.
Privateer pitcher Scott Stonestreet (1-2) held NSU (18-19) off the scoreboard over the first three innings before allowing three runs in the fourth frame. The right-handed pitcher struggled with his control, walking five batters in addition to four hits in his fourth start of the year.
Steffan Farrell cut the lead to one with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, scoring teammate Andrew Garcia, who led the frame with a single.
Farrell's blast ended the night for Colonels' starter Patrick Shreve (1-1). The southpaw allowed two runs on four hits in five innings on the mound, leaving the contest with a 3-2 edge on the scoreboard.
NSU refrained from scoring again until the seventh inning.
The Colonels added three runs in the seventh after a bad hop single by Chase Jaramillo with two outs kept NSU on the move against reliever Coby Landry. After Jeremy Hill followed with a single, Blake Bergeron lifted a home run to left field to extend the visitors' lead to four.
The guests closed out the scoring with three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Bergeron finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs to follow up his six RBI outing against the Privateers in the Colonels' first game of the season against UNO. Four members of the NSU lineup had multiple hits in the contest.
The Privateers were led by Zach Pohto's 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
The home slate continues for UNO this weekend as Temple comes to Maestri Field for a four-game series. The first game between the Privateers and Owls will get underway on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
