SAN DIEGO – The University of New Orleans ended its 24-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap to close out a split of a Saturday doubleheader against San Diego at Cunningham Field.
The victory by UNO (2-25) was preceded by a 9-4 loss in the opener against USD (6-19).
In the night cap, Privateer right-handed pitcher Scott Stonestreet (1-1) threw seven shutout innings in his second collegiate start. The freshman yielded just seven hits while striking out one before Coby Landry picked up the save with two shutout innings in relief.
The game's only runs were scored in the third and fourth inning as UNO posted a tally in each frame.
In the third inning, Beau Boudreaux singled and swiped second before Nolan Church singled him in. An inning later, it was Hunter Boudreaux who singled in Steffan Farrell from second after Farrell reached base when hit by pitch.
The Boudreauxs accounted for five of UNO's eight hits in the game with Beau producing a 3-for-5 outing with Hunter going 2-for-4 to lead the Privateers.
Chris Jensen (0-4) allowed UNO runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking three in seven innings of work. Relief pitcher Paul Paez gave up just one hit in two innings of relief for the Toreros, who were led at the plate by Kris Bryant's 3-for-3 outing.
The opening game saw the Privateers unable to dig themselves out of a 6-0 disadvantage built up by USD over the first two innings of play.
The first three batters of the game reached base for the Toreros, who scored two runs in the opening inning and followed with four more in the second. Corey LeVier singled in both innings and was responsible for three RBIs as part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate for the game.
In the fifth inning, a USD error took away a possible second out for the defense following hits by Chris Geronimo and Blake LeBlanc. Geronimo scored on the error with LeBlanc and Beau Boudreaux touching home late in the frame on a Church triple.
The Toreros added a run in their half of the fifth to make it 7-3 before a Jake Palmisano grounder plated UNO's Michael Tedesco, who led off the sixth inning with a double.
The hosts finalized their scoring in the contest with a pair of runs in the eighth.
Torero starter Paul Sewald (1-1) was the winning pitcher for the first time in his three-year career, giving up four runs – just one earned – on six hits, while striking out two in six innings.
USD had 14 hits for the contest with Bryan Haar leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance. UNO's Tyler Sanders (0-6) yielded 12 of the hits during seven innings of work, allowing seven runs while striking out five.
Seven of the nine Privateer starters tallied a hit in the contest to represent all seven UNO hits in the game.
The two teams will close out their four-game series on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT. Live stats will be available on USDToreros.com.
