Privateers Begin Week With Test Against #10 Southern Miss

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team will begin the week with a big test against the #10 Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Tuesday in Hattiesburg. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.

The Privateers won their weekend series against McNeese after taking a 13-inning thriller by the score of 10-9 on Saturday. Eli Tidwell scored Dathan Cummings on an RBI single to provide the first walk-off win of the season for New Orleans.

Tidwell racked up eight hits over the weekend against McNeese in 15 at-bats, bringing his batting average back up from .293 to .321. Tidwell also provided the first walk-off hit by a Privateer this season in the series finale on Saturday against McNeese.

Luke Lycette won the first Southland Pitcher of the Week award by a Privateer this season. He had a win and a save in three relief appearances last week. Lycette threw 128 total pitches and recorded 10 strikeouts while allowing no runs in 8.2 innings. The Privateers' last Conference Pitcher of the Week award was won by Grant Edwards (Mar. 31, 2025).

Kruise Newman is on a nine-game hitting streak entering the week. He is hitting .410 in that stretch and had a four-hit game in the series finale against McNeese. Newman has collected two or more hits in five of those contests.

The Privateers have taken the national lead in double plays turned with 36 on the season. That was after they had six twin killings against McNeese over the weekend, the most in a weekend series since they had six in February 2025 against Boston College. The Privateers are two double plays turned ahead of Texas State who is second with 34.

New Orleans has lost three straight in the all-time series against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles lead the series 61-52.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Southern Miss went 2-1 in their most recent weekend against Old Dominion. The Golden Eagles won 8-7 in the series finale to move their overall record to 23-9 on the season. The Golden Eagles pitching staff has the 11th best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the nation at 3.14. Kyle Morrison, Joey Urban and Davis Gillespie all rank inside the top ten in the Sun Belt in home runs entering the week.
