LYNCHBURG, Va. – LeMoyne stormed out of the gates with four first inning runs and never looked back on way to a 9-2 victory over the University of New Orleans on the opening of a tournament hosted by Liberty.
With one out on the board in the opening inning, four straight batters reached base for LeMoyne (14-25). Coupled with a passed ball and a wild pitch, the Dolphins would exit the frame with a 4-0 lead against UNO (3-39).
Another wild pitch and an error in the field allowed LeMoyne's lead to grow to 5-0 after two innings before Andrew Garcia belted a home run in the third inning. The solo blast was Garcia's third of the year as the outfielder finished the game with two hits in three plate appearances.
UNO starter Zach Kelt (1-9) exited after six innings and trailing 6-1 after the Dolphins added another run to their count in the fifth frame. The right-handed pitcher allowed six runs – five earned – on nine hits while striking out four and walking five.
The Privateers added their second score of the contest on a Beau Boudreaux sacrifice scored Steffan Farrell in the eighth inning. LeMoyne sandwiched the tally with a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth on a two-run home run by Don Schaaf.
Schaaf's home run completed a 3-for-4 effort with two runs and three RBIs. Five others had at least two hits apiece for the Dolphins, who received a 9-for-17 performance with seven runs and five RBIs from the No. 2 through 5 hitters in the lineup.
