LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of New Orleans baseball dropped a pair of games on Saturday, falling 3-2 to their host Liberty in the afternoon before dropping an 8-2 contest to LeMoyne in the evening.
A pair of pitchers threw complete games to extend the UNO (3-41) losing streak to 12 games while setting the school-record for losses in a single season. The previous mark of 40 was established in 2005 during then-head coach Tom Walter's first year at the helm of the program.
The opening game lasted just 106 minutes as LU (24-19) emerged from a pitching duel behind the complete game of effort of Dane Beakler (2-0), who was making his first start of the year.
Beakler spread out seven UNO hits and allowed one earned run, striking out eight. The pitcher completed his performance on the mound by retiring 14 straight Privateers to preserve the victory.
Nolan Church (0-3) took the loss after his best outing of the season, allowing two runs on eight hits over eight innings of work. Church yielded the game-winning run in the seventh inning on an Austin Taylor home run.
Taylor finished 2-for-3 in the contest, joining Ian Parmley's 2-for-4 effort as the lone members of the Flames with two hits apiece. Parmley scored a run in the first inning after advancing home on a wild pitch followed by a throwing error. He would score another run in the third, benefiting from a dropped foul ball and another throwing error.
Beau Boudreaux accounted for both UNO scores, coming home on a Chris Geronimo double in the third inning before scoring his team-leading 19th run on a throwing error in the fifth. Boudreaux finished 3-for-4 in the game, representing nearly half of the Privateers' seven hits in the contest.
In the nightcap, LeMoyne (15-26) broke open a 2-2 tie with a three-run sixth in order to pull away from UNO.
Four of the first five batters reached base for the Dolphins in the sixth inning including a pair of singles to lead off the frame. The game-changing inning was the last for Privateer starter Tyler Sanders (1-9), who allowed five runs – four earned – on nine hits while striking out six.
LeMoyne had previously started off the scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning and would round out the game with a three-run ninth off of reliever Cory Myers.
UNO's lone runs in the game came when a Boudreaux single on top of a Dolphins' throwing error scored Blake LeBlanc. Zach Pohto continued the scoring later in the inning when he singled in Boudreaux – his third run in two games on the day.
Mark Kuzma (3-5) threw his second complete game of the season and the second in a row by an opposing pitcher against the Privateers. UNO had seven hits and scored one earned run against Kuzma, who struck out six.
Matt Marra led LeMoyne with a 3-for-4 outing with two RBIs and two runs while Brian Stinson contributed a 3-for-5 night to help lead a group of five Dolphins with at least two hits.
Boudreaux paced UNO with a 2-for-4 effort to finish his day with five hits in eight at-bats. Jake Palmisano matched his teammate by going 2-for-4 as well.
The Privateers will play their final game of the weekend at 11 a.m. on Sunday against the host LU. Live stats and audio are available on the LibertyFlames.com web site.
