THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State battled back from a deficit in the latter part of the game, defeating the University of New Orleans 8-4 on Wednesday night at Ray Didier Field.
Blake Bergeron hit 3-for-4 with six RBIs as NSU (13-16) scored two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to erase a 4-3 deficit.
Bergeron would factor into all three innings in which the Colonels posted runs against UNO (2-27). The first baseman belted a three-run home run in the opening inning to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
After popping out in the third, Bergeron had an RBI double in the sixth before scoring later in the inning. He capped his night with a two-run triple in the seventh, while being tagged out at home attempting to hit an inside-the-park home run.
The offensive efforts by Bergeron backed a solid bullpen performance by NSU. Corey Poche (1-1) and Ryan Norton threw two innings of scoreless relief apiece, with Poche allowing two hits to Norton's one.
The duo relieved Colonels' starter Brad Delatte, who left the game after five innings.
Delatte ran into trouble in his final frame on the mound, yielding four runs on four hits to UNO, who also took advantage of two NSU errors.
Consecutive singles by Chris Geronimo and Blake LeBlanc to open the fifth inning set the table for the Privateers.
An error scored Geronimo from second with LeBlanc and teammate Beau Boudreaux also coming home on a Colonels' error. Cameron Wheeless, who singled in LeBlanc, would later come across home plate on a Michael Tedesco ground out.
For the game, LeBlanc was a perfect 3-for-3 while reaching base on a walk in his other plate appearance. Jake Palmisano added three hits in four plate appearances while Geronimo tallied two hits.
Tyler Sanders (0-7) was the pitcher of record for UNO, allowing five runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 inning of work. Sanders came in for Kyle Blancaneaux, who lasted five innings in his first Privateer start and yielded just three runs on four hits, while striking out two.
UNO will resume its string of games away from home this Saturday when it visits Alabama A&M for a three-game series. The teams will play at noon on Saturday and Sunday with a pair of games scheduled for the first day.
