Lady Privateers Drop Contest to Delta State

Keri Thomas Scores 18 Points, 12 in Second Half

NEW ORLEANS – Keri Thomas scored 18 points to lead the University of New Orleans in a 77-49 loss to Delta State on Tuesday night at Lakefront Arena.

The loss dropped UNO to 0-20 on the season while DSU (12-4) won its sixth straight.

The visiting Lady Statesmen used a series of runs in the contest to alter the course of the contest. Following an exchange of three-pointers at the onset of the game, DSU scored seven straight points to take a 10-3 lead.

The Lady Privateers got within five points at 16-11 with 12:58 to go before the half behind the efforts of Mirjam Sipos and Thomas. The Lady Statesmen preceded to go on another 7-0 run and would extend the lead to a first half high of 18 points before UNO connected on a three-pointer prior to the buzzer.

DSU carried a 39-24 advantage into the break with Sipos and Thomas accounting for 17 of the points for UNO.

The Lady Privateers shot 47.8 percent over the first 20 minutes while holding two-time reigning Gulf South Conference Player of the Year Veronica Walker to 1 of 5 shooting from the field during the game's opening 20 minutes.

UNO got off to a sluggish start in the second half, making just one of their first 10 attempts. DSU capitalized to score 17 of the half's first 19 points.

After being held to just two points over the first 6:45 of the second half, the Lady Privateers picked it up offensively. UNO shot 8 of 22 until the final buzzer with Thomas accounting for 12 of the team's 25 second half points.

Sipos finished with 11 points for the Lady Privateers, who also received another 11 from Mechel'le Thomas.

DSU's Aubree Ray scored 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field while leading all players with nine rebounds. Rhandi Ball added 13 points for the Lady Statesmen, who received 12 points apiece from Brooke Rhodes and Walker.

Walker's 4 of 10 performance was just the preseason All-American's fourth in 16 appearances on the season under 50 percent from the field.

The Lady Privateers will return to action on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Auburn-Montgomery.
