NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans baseball team split a season-opening doubleheader against No. 22 Southern Arkansas on Tuesday, winning the first game 7-1 before falling a 7-1 score in the nightcap at Maestri Field.
The debuting
Christian Cale (1-0) made the most of his first start with UNO (1-1) by allowing a single run on three hits with four strikeouts against SAU (1-1) in the opener. The lone score against the former John Curtis standout came in the third inning before he exited in the fifth with a 3-1 lead.
The strong pitched continued when Cameron Glenndinning relieved Cale in the sixth inning. The Australian yielded a single hit over two innings to pick up the save for the Privateers.
Offensively, UNO struck first when Seth Legaist tallied the first of his two RBIs in the game. Laigast singled in
Clint Coleman before adding a sacrifice fly to score Coleman in the fourth frame.
In between the two Coleman runs, the Muleriders knotted the score at one in the third inning with
Cameron Wheeless putting the Privateers back ahead 2-1 with a single that brought home
Zach Pohto in the bottom of the third.
Entering the sixth inning with a 3-1 lead, UNO put across four runs in their final trip to the plate with the assist of three SAU miscues in the field.
Blake LeBlanc and
Dan Perkins had RBI base hits in the frame with Coleman tallying his third run of the contest on an error by Muleriders' reliever Philip Menou.
LeBlanc was the top hitter for the game after going 2-for-3 for with Perkins also adding two hits in his four plate appearances.
Jon Mark Abbey (0-1) took the loss for SAU in the game by allowing two runs on three hits after relieving starter Doug Shields to begin the third inning. The Muleriders' Brady Capshaw delivered base hits in both of his at-bats in addition to reaching base on a walk.
In the second contest, SAU built up a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, scoring three in the first frame and four more in the second. All seven of the runs – five of which were earned – came against Privateer starter
Jake Fabre (0-1), who allowed nine hits and struck out three.
Fabre gave away to
Cory Hoffman, who held the Muleriders off the scoreboard during the final five innings. Hoffman gave up just three hits while forcing 10 of 17 SAU batters he faced into fly ball outs.
The lone UNO score in the game came in the fourth inning when
Beau Boudreaux doubled in Coleman, who reached home plate for the fourth time on the day. The run production came against Muleriders' reliever Justin Parsons with Boudreaux joining LeBlanc, Coleman and Wheeless in providing hits for the Privateers in the game.
The pitcher of record for SAU was starter Janson Carr (1-0), who struck out 4 of 7 UNO batters he faced in two innings. Sheldon O'Dell, James Baune and Justin Thomas each pitched scoreless frames after relieving Parsons.
Trey Buck was 2-for-3 for the Muleriders with two runs in the contest with David Allday adding two more scores on a 2-for-4 day.
UNO will continue its 2012 season on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field against William Carey.
