THIBODAUX, La. – The University of New Orleans baseball team will play Nicholls State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a game moved up a day from the original schedule.
UNO (9-9) had planned to travel to LSU-Shreveport for a Tuesday doubleheader, before the games were called due to inclement weather. With the same band of storms threatening southeastern Louisiana later into the week, Privateer head coach Bruce Peddie reached out to NSU (11-9) to move their contest 24 hours earlier to fill a void on both team's schedules.
This week's meeting is the second of the season between the schools after the Colonels prevailed 15-7 in 11 innings last Tuesday at Maestri Field. UNO's
Cameron Wheeless completed a comeback from 7-2 down with a ninth inning grand slam to knot the game before NSU plated eight runs in the 11
th inning.
Since the setback to the Colonels, UNO dropped 2 of 3 games at Alabama-Huntsville over the weekend.
The Privateer offense was led against the Chargers by three batters, who hit .400 or better led by
Blake LeBlanc with a .429 batting average.
Dan Perkins and
Brandon Simon both hit an even .400 during the three games.
LeBlanc, who is in the midst of a six-game hitting streak tops the ballclub In batting average (.324) while sharing the team lead in doubles (five) and triples (two).
Cory Hoffman (1-0, 1.93 ERA) has started the last two mid-week games for UNO. Hoffman did not factor into the decision last week against NSU while allowing four runs on five hits over a season-long matching five innings of time on the mound.
NSU enters Tuesday on a two-game skid after falling in the final two games of a three-game Southland Conference series against Sam Houston State.
The Colonels are led by Michael LeGrange and Philip Lyons with batting averages of .354 and .338, respectively. LeGrange was held without a hit in four official plate appearances against UNO last week while Lyons tallied five RBIs on 4-of-7 hitting from the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Michael Suk (3-0, 4.29 ERA) was NSU head coach Seth Thibodeaux's choice to start last week. The start was the second on the year for Suk, who conceded two runs on five hits during four innings.
Following this weekend, the Privateers will return home to begin a three-game weekend set against West Georgia on Saturday 2 p.m. The teams will conclude the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
