NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans opened a doubleheader against West Georgia with a 5-1 victory before falling 9-2 in the second contest at Maestri Field on Saturday afternoon.
The twinbill split was the fourth in a row for UNO (10-11), which last produced a different result in a doubleheader with a sweep of LSU-Alexandria on Feb. 25.
The Privateers posted 10 hits in the opening game, the team's fifth time in double digits in six contests.
The offensive production backed the effort of
Stone Speer (2-3), who pitched a career-high eight innings. Speer yielded a single run on three hits while establishing a team season-best eight strikeouts.
Cameron Wheeless and Steffan Farrell accounted for three hits apiece for the Privateers, who led 5-0 after five innings against UWG (16-11).
The UNO offense had five hits through three innings, but could not capitalize until their fourth trip to the plate when
Clint Coleman led off with a double. A Farrell single and a
Jonathan Coco sacrifice fly plated Coleman for a 1-0 Privateer lead.
An inning later, UNO loaded the bases without recording an out to end the contest for UWG starter Seth McClure (2-2). A wild pitch by relief pitcher Chase Riemer coupled with RBI singles by
Brandon Simon and Farrell allowed the Privateers to take a 5-0 lead through five innings.
McClure's final totals included four runs on eight hits in four official innings. Riemer also threw four innings, doing so in relief for the Wolves, allowing a single run on two hits out of the bullpen.
UWG scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth. Brett Wright went 3-for-3 with a run for the Wolves while Justin Croft hit a two-run home run in the ninth against Privateer reliever
Kyle Blancaneaux, who picked up his third save of the season.
The late-game offensive efforts for the Wolves carried into the second game. UWG scored seven runs over the first three innings against UNO starter
Cory Myers (1-1).
The seven runs by UWG ended Myers' outing after 2.2 innings and gave the visitors a 7-1 lead. The Privateers' lone tally at that point came on a Wheeless RBI single that scored
Dan Perkins.
The Wolves added two more runs in the sixth against
Alex Smith to complete their scoring. In between Myers and Smith, UNO received 2.1 scoreless frames from
Cory Hoffman.
Cody Skinner (5-1) earned the win on the mound for UWG by throwing 8.1 innings. Skinner scattered five Privateer hits while allowing two runs – one earned – with Randall Wright retiring the final two batters.
Stuart Drew, Tanner Drennen and Jayke Graham all hit 3-for-4 for the Wolves in the second contest.
The two teams will play a rubber game to their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. A tailgate hosted by the Privateer Athletic Foundation gets underway at 11 a.m. outside the ballpark with the first 200 fans through the gates receiving a free Hubig's pie.
