NEW ORLEANS – West Georgia was active on the basepaths at Maestri Field on Sunday afternoon, claiming a three-game series over the University of New Orleans with a 12-6 win.
The win was the second in a row for UWG (17-11) after UNO (10-12) picked up a victory in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The visiting Wolves never trailed in a game in which the leadoff batter reached base in 8 of 9 innings. The squad totaled 19 hits and started the scoring with a three-run second inning.
UNO knotted the score with two runs in the second and a third an inning later, but it was UWG who continued to add to its tally. The Wolves plated five runs over the middle innings and headed to the seventh with an 8-6 lead.
The two-run deficit was as close as the Privateers would get through the final pitch. Though UWG was held off the scoreboard in the seventh frame, the team added three in the eighth and a final tally in the ninth to create the final score.
Max Aeschlimann (4-3) picked up the win despite yielding 11 hits. The Privateers picked up six runs against the UWG starting pitcher before going without a score against Wolves relievers Randall Wright and Alex Allen.
Jake Fabre (3-4) was the losing pitcher for UNO. Fabre allowed six runs – five earned – on nine hits during four innings on the mound.
Cameron Wheeless posted his third multi-hit game of the weekend with a 2-for-5 performance and two runs scored. Wheeless entered Sunday 5-for-6 at the plate against UWG.
Blake LeBlanc, Steffan Farrell,
Clint Coleman and
Zach Pohto joined Wheeless with two hits apiece. Pohto's swing accounted for a team-high three RBIs.
The Wolves were led offensively by Stuart Drew and Tanner Drennen. The pair had four hits apiece with Drew and teammate Justin Croft accounting four RBIs each.
UNO will play a rare Monday game at Spring Hill on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Live stats will be available through the SHCBadgers.com web site.
