HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of New Orleans snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 9-4 win on Wednesday night at Wheeler Field against William Carey.
UNO (13-19) took advantage of eight walks during the first three innings to build up an 8-0 lead over WCU (25-20).
A
Cameron Wheeless bases-clearing double was part of a six-run second built around five walks issued to the Privateers in the frame.
Crusaders' starter Michael Coelho (3-1) was responsible for four of the 'free passes' and ended up with five walks, in addition to five runs allowed during 1.2 innings on the mound.
The control problems for WCU continued with relief pitcher Brandon Jones, who walked two prior to a two-run double by
Zach Pohto that increased the lead to 8-0. The Crusaders scored their first run of the game with the assist of two Privateer errors in the bottom of the third.
UNO added to its total in the fifth when
Brandon Simon singled in
Beau Boudreaux.
The Boudreaux score padded the lead for Privateer starter
Alex Smith (1-0), who exited his first collegiate start after five innings with a 9-1 advantage. The win was the first for the freshman, who allowed a single run on two hits.
WCU added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth for their final scores.
Wheeless was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead UNO, who also received three RBIs from Pohto.
Clint Coleman also added a pair of hits for the Privateers.
Six players tallied a hit apiece for the Crusaders, who defeated UNO earlier in the season at Maestri Field.
The Privateers will open a three-game series against No. 16 Delta State on Saturday at 3 p.m. A single game follows at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
