Southern Hands UNO 9-4 Loss

Privateers Head to North Alabama This Weekend

BATON ROUGE, La. – An early 6-0 deficit was too much to overcome for the University of New Orleans in a 9-4 loss to Southern at Lee-Hines Field on Wednesday night.

The win was the seventh in a row for a SU (22-14) squad that jumped out to the 6-0 lead after scoring three runs apiece in the first two innings.

UNO (14-23) could only cut the deficit to four runs in the in the sixth inning as the teams engaged in the business of trading scores during the game's middle three innings.

The Privateers scored at least one run in the fourth, fifth and six frames while the Jaguars did the same.

In the fourth, a Cameron Wheeless single scored Zach Pohto to get UNO within five at 6-1. Dan Perkins came home in the fifth following an error in the field to make it a 7-2 contest.

Wheeless and Clint Coleman led off the sixth inning with singles for the Privateers before Stefan Farrell doubled the pair in to cut the SU advantage to 8-4. The two Wheeless hits were part of a 3-for-4 night by the UNO third baseman.

Alex Smith (1-1) was tagged with the loss in his second collegiate start. Smith allowed seven runs on eight hits while striking out three in four innings. Privateer relief pitchers Jordan Nelson and Garrett Manning contributed an inning of scoreless relief apiece.

Daniel Garcia (3-1) was the winning pitcher for SU after allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings. Relief pitcher Pedro Fargas did not allow a single hit in the final three innings to pick up the save.

SU's Stephen Wallace led all players with a 4-for-5 outing that included six RBIs. Derrick Hopkins took advantage of Wallace's evening by scoring three times.

UNO will begin a three-game series at North Alabama on Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lions are 31-12 and ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II.
