BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern capitalized on a fielding error by the University of New Orleans in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 win at Lee-Hines Field on Tuesday night.
Trailing 2-1 entering the sixth inning, SU (26-14) plated a pair of runs following the UNO (14-27) miscue in the field. The Jaguars added another run to their total in the eighth inning to extend their winning streak to 11 games.
The 2-1 advantage was one of the two leads in the game for the Privateers.
UNO moved ahead 1-0 in the top of the second when
Clint Coleman scored on a batted ball by
Stefan Farrell. Coleman had advanced to third after being hit by pitch and then a two-base error by SU.
The Jaguars knotted the score on a Stephen Wallace home run in the bottom of the second before the Privateers moved ahead with their final run on the game when
Brandon Simon doubled in
Beau Boudreaux.
An error in the outfield allowed one run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Wallace plating the final run for SU. Wallace's fly ball would have been the third out, if not for the error.
Six pitchers took the mound for UNO as part of a pre-determined rotation.
Kyle Blancaneaux (0-3) was tagged with the loss as two runs – both unearned – were credited to the pitcher during two innings of work.
