Murray State Races to Victory against Privateer Women

MURRAY Ky. - The Murray State Racers (6-3) used strong play and a balanced scoring effort to coast to an 88-47 victory over the New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-7) at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.

UNO got out to an early 8-4 lead in the first threeminutes of the contest that included four successful trips to the free throw line. However, the Racers took over the play of the first half after that point as they scored the next 15 points. They grabbed their first lead at 10-8 with 15 minutes left on a lay up by Jessica Winfrey.

Melissa Jensen broke the Racers' 15-0 run with a jumper at the 11:17 mark. That ended a 7:45 drought by the Privateers without a field goal. Jensen led all Privateers in the first half with 9 points.

The Privateers were a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line in the opening half, but they conceded 22 points in the paint to the Racers. Murray State also used the long range shot as a weapon, sinking 5 of 11 shots from beyond the arc to help them to a 45-21 halftime advantage.

Murray State leading scorer, Keiona Kirby struggled in the first half as the Privateers bottled her to just 2 points on 1-6 from the field in the opening half. Kirby had a much better second half for the Racers with 14 points on 6-8 shooting. Kirby was one of two Racers to wind up with a double double as she also pulled down 11 boards. Jessica Winfrey added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Jensen wound up leading the Privateers with 13 points and 10 boards for her first double double of the season. Octavia Wilson had 8 points off the bench, all in the second half. Mathilde Fogelstrom put in 7 points and led the team with 8 boards.

The Privateers are next in action against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, December 14th. Tip will take place after the men's contest against Champion Baptist which starts at 2 PM. Video of the game will be available on UNO Showcase.
