HUNTSVILLE, Texas -
Soledad Calderon Arroyo was involved in both victories for the New Orleans women's tennis team in a 4-1 loss at future Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State on Friday afternoon.
The dual defeat was the third straight for UNO (0-3) which has losses at home to Nicholls State and on the road to Mississippi State this season.
Calderon picked up her first win of the day alongside
Kristina Martic at the No. 1 doubles' court. The Privateer duo defeated the SHSU (2-3) pair of Tatyana Postnikova and Nadia Dubyanskaya by an 8-6 score.
UNO came just short of claiming the doubles' point with
Paula Jimenez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson being dropped 9-8 by the Bearkat duo of Imke Jagau and Kayla Stevenson at the No. 3 position.
The momentum remained in SHSU's side following the narrow defeat. The Bearkats won points at the No. 4 through No. 6 court in singles' action by straight sets.
Calderon's 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 3 position over Natalie Petaia provided the lone victory for the Privateers in singles' play. The freshman avoided three sets for the first time in five matches while improving to 2-1 during the dual campaign.
With the dual match win secured for SHSU and the temperature dropping, play was concluded. Both
Marta Sans at the No. 1 court and Martic at the No. 2 position had split sets with their opponents when the matches were called off.
UNO will resume its schedule on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Prairie View A&M.
