NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans women's tennis team fell one three-set victory short of defeating McNeese State, dropping Sunday afternoon's dual 4-3 at the University Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles' point, UNO (1-5) needed to win four of the day's six singles matches.
Fanny Benincasa picked up the first victory for the Privateers, defeating Andreea Nenu 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 court. The remaining UNO points came in three sets as
Kristina Martic and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo both rallied from a set down for victories.
Martic bested Lara Pujol 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 position with Calderon rallying to top Anastasia Surkova 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
UNO came up short of taking the fourth singles' match against MSU (7-3) as Privateer freshman
Paula Jimenez Sanchez could not follow the trend set by Martic and Calderon. Sanchez forced a third set before falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to Annabelle Peacock at the No. 6. court.
The Cowgirls' had previously won singles' matches at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions in straight sets, in addition to both completed doubles' matches.
UNO's next match is Wednesday at 1 p.m. as the Privateers visit longtime I-10 rival South Alabama.
