LAFAYETTE, La. – A victory for Louisiana-Lafayette at the No. 2 doubles position proved to be critical in a 5-2 victory over New Orleans on Friday morning.
With the first two doubles' matches split, the No. 2 court became the deciding match for the doubles' point. The UNO (1-7) duo of
Marta Sans and
Fanny Benincasa led 7-6 before the ULL (6-4) pair of Juliette Clement and Melissa Burckhartt broke serve twice en route to a 9-7 victory at the court.
The doubles' victory provided the Ragin' Cajuns with a 1-0 lead and significant momentum heading into singles' play. ULL moved ahead 2-0 quickly when Privateer senior
Kristina Martic retired at the No. 1 court.
Soledad Calderon Arroyo and Sans were the lone winners in singles' play for UNO.
Calderon swept Bailey Van Dyke 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 position with Sans rallying from a set down for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory at the No. 2 court against Nicole Breaux. Sans has now won two in a row with Friday's appearance at the No. 2 position, her first time not playing at the No. 1 court in 21 career duals.
The remaining three singles' matches featured close results in the first set before the Ragin' Cajuns had convincing margins of victory in the second set.
Prior to the crucial doubles' match, UNO picked up a win at the No. 3 position as Calderon Arroyo and
Paula Jimenez Sanchez teamed for an 8-4 victory over Breaux and Van Dyke.
The Privateers will conclude what has been a busy stretch of three matches in four days with a 10 a.m. dual at Southern Miss on Saturday. The UNO women's team will be joined by their male counterparts for the contest at USM.
