NEW ORLEANS – A pair of three-set matches went in Illinois State's favor in a 4-3 victory over the New Orleans women's tennis team at the University Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 3-2 with a pair of matches on the court, ISU (6-5) rallied from a set down to pick up wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 court positions to claim Tuesday's dual.
The Redbirds' Emmie Marx picked up a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 result at the No. 1 position against
Marta Sans of UNO (3-9) to clinch the dual. The result came after ISU received a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory by Carolina Abello over
Kristina Martic on the No. 2 court.
Prior to the rally, all things seemed to be heading in the Privateers' direction.
UNO won the doubles' point for an early 1-0 lead. Martic and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo teamed for an 8-6 at the No. 1 court with Sans and Benincasa clinching the point with an 8-6 result of their own at the No. 2 position.
The first four singles' matches off the court ended in straight sets with Benincasa at No. 4 and
Victoria Svensson at No. 6 posting wins for the Privateers. The victories for ISU took place at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, setting the stage for the dual-deciding matches at the top two courts.
UNO's schedule resumes at the UTC on Thursday at 2 p.m. against Buffalo. The current homestand also includes matches on Friday at 2 p.m. against Jackson State and Saturday at 11 a.m. versus Alcorn State.
