Privateers Handed Saturday Loss by Baylor

Four-Run Seventh Lifts Bears Past Privateers

HOUSTON – A four-run seventh inning for Baylor proved costly for the New Orleans baseball team in an 8-3 loss on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field.

BU (9-10) held on to a 4-2 lead entering their at-bat in the seventh inning, which built the first significant lead for either squad in the game. The first five batters in the frame reached base for the Bears, who defeated UNO (3-17) for a second straight day.

The Privateers had previously scored in the top of the seventh before grounding into an inning-ending double play. UNO grounded into another double play to close the eighth inning and left four runners stranded in the team's final three at-bats, ending any chance at a rally.

Prior to the big inning by BU, the Privateers had kept the lead within reach.

Trailing 1-0 after the opening inning, UNO knotted the game with a tally in the second frame. Andre Damiens singled, advanced to second on a Brian Dixon walk and then advanced to third on a passed ball before Jonathan Coco brought Damiens home on a sacrifice fly.

BU responded in the third with a pair of scores before moving ahead 4-1 with a single run in the fifth.

UNO then cut the lead down to 4-2 as Dixon scored on a Tim Broussard single in the seventh inning. The Privateers' final score came in the ninth when Zach Liberto picked up the second of his two hits in the game with an RBI double that plated Damiens.

Daniel Martinez (0-2) took the loss for UNO after allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits over three innings of work. Bears' pitcher Bobby McCormack (1-0) was the winning pitcher after yielding just a single hit in three innings after entering the contest in the fourth inning.

UNO was led at the plate by lead-off hitter Chaz Boyer, who went 3-for-4 in the game. The three hits tied a career high for Boyer, who produced a trio of hits against South Alabama on Feb. 22. Damiens had a pair of runs with Liberto's 2-for-4 effort joining Boyer as the lone members of the Privateer roster with multi-hit contests.

Logan Brown paced BU with a 4-for-5 showing from the lead-off position. Three other Bears had at least two hits in the contest with Brown and Cal Towey responsible for two runs apiece.

UNO will close out its weekend at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Houston. Live stats, video and audio will be available through the UHCougars.com web site.
