HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The New Orleans women's tennis team snapped a four-dual losing skid with a convincing 6-1 victory over Southern Miss on Saturday morning.
The victory was the second on the season for UNO (2-7) which last won 5-0 at Prairie View A&M on Feb. 16. The Privateers started Saturday's dual by gaining the doubles' point for the first time since that win against PV.
Kristina Martic and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo extended their win streak to three in a row with an 8-2 win at the No. 1 court against the USM (0-10) pair of Alexus Coats and Elanor Grossman.
Marta Sans and
Fanny Benincasa picked up an 8-1 win at the No. 2 position with Paula Jiminez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson rolling to an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 court.
In singles' play, the Privateers won four of the five completed matches in straight sets. The lone exception came at the No. 2 court where Sans won her third straight match with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 defeat of Kate Lanier.
Arroyo produced her second consecutive victory with a 6-1, 6-1 result at the No. 3 position with other positive results for UNO coming from Benincasa, Svensson and Jimenez.
The Golden Eagles' lone victory came at the No. 1 court where Martic retired due to injury.
The UNO women's tennis team will continue their season next Saturday on the road against Alabama State at 2 p.m. One day later, the Privateers will visit former Sun Belt Conference rival Troy for a 10 a.m. dual.
