NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans women's tennis team won its second straight match, dispatching crosstown rival Xavier 6-1 on Wednesday at the University Tennis Center.
UNO (5-10) took command of the match by taking the three doubles' matches against XULA (8-7).
The pair of
Kristina Martic and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo was an 8-1 winner at the No. 1 position with
Marta Sans and
Fanny Benincasa posting an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 court.
Paula Jimenez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson completed the doubles' sweep with a hard fought 8-6 victory at the No. 3 position.
In singles' play, all five Privateer victories came in straight sets.
Martic defeated Amanda Materre 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 position with Calderon claiming a 6-2, 6-3 win over Brion Flowers at the No. 3 court. Benincasa was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3 with Jimenez and Svensson posting wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
The lone loss for UNO came at the No. 1 court where Kourtney Howell outlasted Sans 7-5, 6-2, 17-15. Both players had opportunities to win the match in the super-tiebreaker.
The Privateers will continue their homestand on Thursday, Mar. 28 at 2 p.m. against future Southland Conference rival Oral Roberts. The dual against ORU is the team's final dual of March before they close the season with four matches in April.
