NEW ORLEANS – A pair of New Orleans miscues gave Tulane a 2-0 lead as the Green Wave held on for a 3-2 win to claim the deciding game of the First NBC Bank Cup on Wednesday night at Turchin Stadium.
TU (20-20) took advantage of three walks and a two-out throwing error to plate their first run of the contest in the second inning. The Green Wave added another run in the fifth on an errant throw home to take their 2-0 lead.
Both unearned runs came during UNO (6-33) starter
Stephen Potter's stint in the contest. Potter dropped to 0-3 on the season, allowing a single hit during a career-long 4.1 innings of work.
“We had some opportunities, but unfortunately we had the defensive lapses,” said UNO head coach Bruce Peddie. “That was the name of the game and cost us two runs. When you lose by a run, you can see what the difference was tonight.”
Chaz Boyer produced the Privateers' first hit of the game in the top of sixth with TU responded with their third run in the bottom of the frame when Bowen Woodson sacrificed to centerfield to score Garrett Cannizaro. Cannizaro was 2-for-3 with his eighth inning double representing the lone extra-base hit for either club.
A pair of hits in the seventh followed by two more in the eighth contributed to a pair of UNO scores to cut it to 3-2 in favor of the hosts.
Jonathan Coco and
Reese Kanter produced back-to-back singles in the seventh with a
Tim Broussard ground out plating Coco.
Brian Dixon led off the eighth with a single before being lifted for
Dan Perkins, who stole second, advanced to third on a Boyer fly out before reaching home on a
Zach Liberto single.
“The kids battled through and we have a lot of work ahead of us,” said Peddie. “We were down, they battled and fought back. We even had an opportunity there in the ninth. I am proud of these kids and we just got to keep battling through.”
Andrew Reeves (1-0) won his 2013 debut, holding UNO without a hit through three innings on a planned pitch count. Both Privateer runs came against Kyle McKenzie before TU closer Ian Gibaut picked up his ninth save of the season on 1.2 innings with the lone mark against him, a walk issued to Coco to lead off the frame.
Raymond Winter threw two innings of scoreless relief for UNO, allowing the squad a chance to remain in the contest.
Next for the Privateers is a three-game series at Oklahoma that gets underway at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. All three games of the series will be nationally televised on Fox College Sports or Fox Sports Oklahoma.

Entering the contest, his previous career-long was a 2.1 inning showing at Houston (Mar. 15)…All eight UNO runs scored in the series against Tulane entering Wednesday's contest had come in the second inning until the Privateers plated a run in the seventh inning… UNO and TU will meet one final time on May 1 at 5 p.m. The start time of the contest was moved up last month from 6:30 p.m. due to the Green Wave's “good neighbor agreement” and the limited number of night games allowed at Turchin Stadium.
