NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans women's tennis team completed their season with a convincing 6-1 victory over Jackson State on Thursday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
The win improved UNO to 8-11 on the season after the squad finished their campaign by posting victories in five of their final six duals of the season.
Playing her final match, senior
Fanny Benincasa improved to 8-1 at home with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kesica Jayapalan at the No. 4 position to highlight the results for the Privateers against JSU (4-16).
Benincasa had previously teamed with
Marta Sans for an 8-4 result at the No. 2 doubles' court against Karen Martinez and Angela Condorelli to even out their doubles' record at 9-9 in the spring and 13-10 overall.
Freshman
Soledad Calderon Arroyo completed a 14-4 campaign in the spring with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Rebeka Adewumi. Calderon paired with senior
Kristina Martic for an 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles' court as the duo posted a UNO-best 9-6 record while playing in the top spot this season.
The remaining doubles' court went to the Privateers'
Paula Jimenez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson by an 8-1 score at the No. 3 court. Sans, Sancez and Svensson rounded out the UNO singles' victories. Sans won at the No. 1 position while Sanchez and Svensson posted victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
An NCAA Division I Independent in 2012-13, the UNO women's tennis team will play a full Southland Conference schedule in the spring of 2014. The squad anticipates opening their fall season with the Big Easy Classic at the UTC in late September.
