NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans women's tennis team earned the program's first-ever victory over Auburn-Montgomery on Sunday afternoon at the University Tennis Center with a 6-1 result.
The win was the fourth in a row for UNO (7-10), which was winless in two previous meetings against AUM (9-8) in the school's previous two meetings.
Fanny Benincasa continued her solid play as of late by playing a crucial role in the victory. The senior first paired with
Marta Sans for an 8-1 win over Maria Vargas and Hagar Caro to clinch the doubles' point. The victory for the duo represented their fourth in a row and seventh in last 10 duals.
Later in the dual, Benincasa was one of the three Privateers to win contested singles' matches against the short-handed Warhawks' program that entered the match ranked No. 3 in NAIA. Benincasa was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at the No. 4 court against Caro, giving the Bordeaux, France native her fourth straight singles' victory.
Kristina Martic and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo joined Benincasa in posting wins. Martic defeated Chanel Cunningham 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 position with Calderon defeating Vargas 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 3 court to close out the win.
Paula Jimenez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson did not play on Sunday as the visiting Warhawks only brought four players to the duals due to recent injuries. Jimenez and Svensson were rewarded wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles' courts by default, respectively. The duo also received a victory at the No. 3 doubles' position by default.
Three matches remain for the UNO women's tennis team beginning on Friday, Apr. 12 at 2 p.m. against West Florida. The Privateers will also play Abilene Christian while at UWF on Sunday, Apr. 14 at 11 a.m. before concluding the season at the UTC on Thursday, Apr. 18 at 11 a.m. versus Jackson State.
