– No. 29 Campbell extended its winning streak to seven games by defeating New Orleans 14-0 at Jim Perry Stadium on Thursday night in the opener of a three-game series.
UNO (7-42) trailed by a 3-0 score through four innings before the game got away from the squad.
Champions of the Big South Conference's North Division, Campbell (44-9) scored a pair of runs on three hits in the fifth before collecting nine more runs in the sixth. Michael Felton had a three-run triple in the sixth to start the scoring for the Camels, who exited the frame with a 14-0 lead.
The nine-run inning represented the final scoring for Campbell, which was held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game by Privateer relief pitchers
Kyle Blancaneaux and
Nicholas Schiro. Blancaneaux threw 1.1 innings while Schiro pitched a scoreless eighth.
The first five runs for the Camels were charged against UNO start
Blake Prest (1-7), who took the loss for the team after also allowing eight hits during 4.2 innings of work.
Offensively, UNO stranded 12 total runners in the contest, including a trio of Privateers in the seventh. For the contest, the visiting squad left at least a pair of runners on base in five innings.
Seth Laigast was 2-for-4 to lead UNO, producing his third multi-hit game of the season.
Dan Perkins had a matching 2-for-4 effort with the senior's third inning double extending his hitting streak to seven games.
Five other Privateers produced a hit as the team racked up nine for the game.
For Campbell, Felton was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and four RBIs. Brent Graham added a 3-for-4 outing with two scores while Ben McQuown came across home plate three times as part of a 2-for-4 performance.
Ryan Mattes (7-3) earned the victory after allowing just five hits to the Privateers during six innings while striking out six of the 24 batters he faced.
