NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (3-5) pounded out 21 hits, but committed seven errors in an 8-7 loss to the Indiana State Sycamores (7-1) in 14 innings on Friday night at Zephyr Field.
The final miscue proved to be the most costly for the Privateers. With runners on first and second and one out, a ground ball was hit to second where
Nick Morgan tried to make a play at the runner heading for second. The throw went into the outfield, and Michael Eberle scored to put the Sycamores up 8-7.
In the bottom of the 14th,
Cameron Hoffman hit a lead-off single to start the frame. A pair of ground outs moved Hoffman to third with two outs, but
Brian Dixon grounded out on a tapper in front of the plate to end the game.
Indiana State started fast by punching four runs across in the top of the first off starter
Alex Smith. A pair of RBI hits by Jacob Hayes and Brian Romero put the Sycamores up 2-0. Then the Privateers were victimized by back-to-back two-out errors that pushed the Indiana State advantage to 4-0 after the Sycamores' first cuts at the plate.
New Orleans got a run back in the second, then took their first lead in the third by plating four runs. Hoffman hit a two-run double to tie the game and
Dane Landry's sacrifice fly RBI put the Privateers ahead 5-4 after three innings. The game would remain scoreless until the sixth when Smith gave up a two-run single to Cody Zimmerman.
That was the last batter Smith faced as he was lifted for
Hunter Medine. In his first batter faced, Medine struck out Hayes on a 1-2 pitch then catcher
Brian Dixon caught Zimmerman stealing to end the frame and keep the Privateers deficit at one.
Indiana State brought on closer Ryan Keeafaber who had previously not allowed a hit in five appearances.
Chaz Boyer and
Samuel Capielano started the frame with back-to-back hits. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position and
Hezekiah Randolph tied the game on a line drive RBI single. Hoffman's RBI ground out put the Privateers up 7-6 heading to the ninth.
Raymond Winter tried to save it for New Orleans, but got into a bases loaded jam with two outs. Winter threw a wild pitch with Taylor Steen batting and Tyler Wampler scored from third to tie the game at 7-7.
Tyler Schwaner came in and pitched 5.0 innings of relief, but was charged with the loss after conceding the unearned run in the 14th that ended the contest.
Hoffman went 5-for-7 on the night to lead the Privateers' offense. Boyer ,Capielano, and
Reese Kanter each had three hits. New Orleans stranded 22 runners while Indiana State stranded 17 on the night.
The two teams will continue the weekend set on Saturday with a first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
