NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (2-2) looks to bounce back against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (2-8) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
New Orleans fell short in a valiant comeback attempt the last time on the court. After falling behind 3-0 to Louisiana-Monroe, the Privateers rallied to take the next two singles points, but lost a second set tiebreaker at the 2 position which determined the match. As was the fate for the men's team, the women also had their match against Troy rained out last Sunday.
Anna Segarra Rius has fueled the Privateers in the early stages of the season, especially in singles play. Rius has won all three of her completed singles matches in straight sets, mostly from the 4 position. Rius was bumped up to the 3 spot in her singles win as part of the dual against Louisiana Tech.
After this match, the Privateers will have a two-game road stint against Southland foes, Sam Houston State and Lamar before returning home for six consecutive matches.
The Golden Eagles come in having lost seven straight matches. Included in that span have been a pair of narrow 4-3 losses against Southland opponents, Southeastern and Northwestern State. The two Golden Eagles wins in the dual season have come against Jackson State and Texas A & M-Corpus Christi.
Carolin Drescher has had a solid individual season so far for Southern Miss. From the 2 position, Drescher won eight straight singles matches before having that streak snapped in the Golden Eagles' dual against UTEP.
