NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (2-3) lost a tiebreaker in the doubles point as part of a 6-1 loss to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (3-8) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
The two teams split matches on Doubles Court 1 and 3 with
Hafsa Laraibi and
Anna Segarra Rius winning a tiebreaker. The tandem of
Marta Sans and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo were beaten 7-4 in a tiebreak though to give the doubles point to Southern Miss.
In singles play, the Privateers lost both matches that went to three sets. Arroyo was beaten 6-3 in the deciding set at the 1 position and Yasmine Rashad lost the third set 6-2 at the 6 position. Both players won the second set to push their respective opponents the distance.
Rius was the only Privateers player to notch a point, and remains unbeaten in singles play on the year. From the 4 position, Rius beat Kathrin Waidner 6-3, 6-3. Rius is now 4-0 in singles matches in the dual meet. Rius' doubles victory with Laraibi was the tandem's first of the year.
New Orleans will face their first Southland opponent when they battle with Sam Houston State on Friday, Mar. 7. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
