NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (3-7) gave up two RBI on hit batters with the bases loaded which contributed to an 11-4 loss against the Indiana State Sycamores (9-1) on Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field.
The game was tied at 3-3 after the fourth when Mike Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch from Privateers reliever
Hunter Medine. In the sixth, the first two Indiana State batters reached base.
Raymond Winter was called out of the bullpen and issued a walk to load the bases. Winter retired the next two batters, but could not finish the frame before falling behind.
Tony Rosselli was hit by a pitch on a 2-2 count against Winter that scored the go-ahead run. Michael Eberle came up next and crushed a grand slam to left field to break the game open, and push the Sycamores advantage to 8-3. Indiana State scored in seven of nine innings on the day.
New Orleans scored three runs in the first two innings to gain an early advantage. After loading the bases in the first in part to two errors,
Zane Pitzer hit an RBI single to give the Privateers an early 1-0 lead. After Indiana State tied the game at 1-1 in the second, the Privateers punched two runs in the bottom of the second.
Brian Dixon led off with a line drive double, and
Chaz Boyer drew a walk. After both runners advanced on a passed ball,
Samuel Capielano hit a two-run single.
The Privateers only were able to manage one other run in the contest that came on an RBI fielder's choice from
Reese Kanter in the bottom of the sixth. The Privateers left the bases loaded three times in the first, fifth, and eighth inning.
Pitzer, Capielano, and Boyer each had two hits for New Orleans. Boyer scored a pair of runs. The Privateers drew five walks on the day, and stranded 12 runners. Starter
Nick Halliday went 3.2 innings before being pulled while surrendering three runs.
Eberle led the Sycamores offense with five RBI. Cody Zimmerman went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, and scored three times. Sycamores starter Brad Lombard moved to 3-0 on the year while not giving up an earned run in five innings despite allowing seven hits.
The Privateers will next take on Southern in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, Mar. 5. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
