Privateers Pounce Early in Win Over Alcorn State

Box Score

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team  (7-14, 1-5 Southland) struck early in a 6-3 win over the Alcorn State Braves (3-23, 3-6 SWAC) on Tuesday night at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.

New Orleans got the scoring started early with two runs in the first. Samuel Capielano led off with an infield single, and stole second. With runners on second and third, Hezekiah Randolph drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly. Reese Kanter later scored on a wild pitch to give the Privateers an early 2-0 lead.

Four more runs were added in the second inning against Alcorn State starter Jonathan Morales. After a walk and a single put the first two runners on, Brian Dixon put down a bunt for a single to load the bags with no outs. Chaz Boyer then came up and drove a run in on a single to right for his first RBI in his last nine games.

Privateers starter Hunter Medine was only able to last four innings despite keeping the Braves off the scoreboard. Medine gave up four hits and walked three batters. "Hunter's got to learn it's not one game. It's all about concentration and that's what these young kids have got to learn to do. They've got to learn what they want to do and go out and execute and if we don't then you're going to have problems. He's very capable but his concentration has got to improve," said Head Coach Ron Maestri.

The Braves struck for two runs off of reliever Darron McKigney in the fifth. Scotty Peavey produced the first on an RBI single, and Joshua Powell then scored on a wild pitch to cut the New Orleans lead to 6-2. It was the first runs surrendered by McKigney in a relief role this season.

Alcorn State added another run in the eighth. After Tyler Schwaner walked consecutive batters to start the inning and fell behind 1-0 on the third batter, he was pulled. Seth Laigast came in and gave up an RBI single, but was able to close out the frame and finish off the contest for his third save of the year.

"Tyler didn't have a very good game at all. Seth came in and everybody else came in and threw strikes, but we get a lead and we do what we've done all year. We just fall asleep, and we've got to pick it up, but it was a good win," said Maestri.

Capielano led the Privateers with a four-hit night. Boyer went 2-for-4, and six different Privateers scored a run. Medine picked up the win, his third of the season. With the win, the Privateers have matched their win total from the 2013 season. Randolph had his hitting streak snapped at 16  after going 0-for-3 at the plate.

The Braves stranded 12 runners on base on the night. Despite giving up six runs (five earned) in the first two innings, Morales went the distance while throwing 123 pitches. Moses Charles led the Braves' offense by going 3-for-5 at the plate.

The teams will cap off the mid-week series on Wednesday with a first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. Raymond Winter returns from suspension, and will start for New Orleans.
