NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (8-14, 1-5 Southland) turns back to conference play for a home weekend series against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (12-15, 3-3) starting Friday at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.
The Privateers surpassed their win total from the 2013 season during a two-game series sweep of Alcorn State. New Orleans used the series to get a much needed offensive spark, hitting .319 as a team while scoring 16 runs, collecting 10 walks and striking out just three times against the Braves.
Freshman pitcher
Hunter Medine comes into the weekend 3-0 after picking up a win in the opening game of the series against Alcorn State while throwing four shutout innings. Medine has not allowed an earned run in 10 appearances (two starts) while throwing 18.2 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .145 off of Medine this season.
Freshman shortstop
Samuel Capielano is on an active seven-game hitting streak entering the weekend. Capielano has nine multi-hit games including a four-hit night on Tuesday against Alcorn State. On the year, Capielano has a .429 batting average (15-for-35) when leading off an inning and also leads the team in sacrifice hits with five.
This will be the first ever meeting between the Privateers and Islanders. It's the second time New Orleans will face an opponent they have not seen before. Last weekend marked the first three meetings against Houston Baptist in Privateers history.
The Islanders enter having won five of the last seven including picking up a 6-1 win in their only mid-week game against Texas-San Antonio on Tuesday night. In their five wins in that stretch, the Islanders have scored 46 runs. The only two losses in that span came in back-to-back days against Southeastern last weekend.
Jordan Lee has provided a spark for the Islanders offense primarily from the top of the order. Lee is batting .313 and leads the team with 19 runs scored while checking in tied for second with 14 RBIs. Brandon Tierney is hitting a team-best .318 with seven extra base hits (five doubles, two triples) and has struck out just seven times in 85 at-bats.
The series starts on Friday night with a first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
Alex Smith (1-3, 4.98) will take the ball for the Privateers and Matt Danton (4-2, 3.35).
