NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (5-6, 1-2 Southland) overcame an early deficit to earn a 4-3 win over the Texas Pan-American Broncs (3-14, 1-1 WAC) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
The Privateers faced early adversity after dropping the doubles point. New Orleans got a win from the tandem at the 2 position as
Christoffer Appelgren and
Rui Silva took an 8-3 victory. However, the Broncs won both matches on the surrounding courts to earn the doubles point.
New Orleans was resilient on the day, and bounced back to win four of six singles matches.
Timo Kranz played in his first singles match since Mar. 12 and took a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the 1 position. Kranz is now 2-3 in singles play on the year.
Rui Silva showed a strong effort at the front end of the Privateers' rotation as well. Silva won in straight sets at 6-1, 6-2 from the 2 position and busted a four-match losing streak. Prior to Saturday, Silva's last singles victory came on Mar. 7 against Oral Roberts.
The Privateers lost matches at the 3 and 4 spots, but Appelgren and
Daniel Populus each won their matches in straight sets at the last two spots in the order to secure the victory for New Orleans. It was the sixth time New Orleans lost the doubles point this season, but it was the first where they recovered to take a match victory.
New Orleans turns their attention back to conference play when they host Incarnate Word on Sunday. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
