Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (10-23, 2-13 Southland) gave up a big late inning in a 10-4 loss to the Lamar Cardinals (21-15, 8-7) on Sunday at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals have now won six straight conference games after sweeping the Privateers.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, New Orleans surrendered five runs. In his third inning of work out of the bullpen,
Daniel Martinez allowed a lead-off walk to Jake Sutton. After a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single put runners on the corners with one out, back-to-back RBI singles from Sam Bumpers and Brandon Provost extended the Cardinals lead to 7-4.
Then, Jacoby Middleton cleared the bases with a three-run home run to cap off the scoring. New Orleans lost the lead in controversial fashion. Ahead 3-2 in the fifth with two outs, a ground ball was hit to short.
Samuel Capielano's throw pulled
Jonathan Coco off the bag, but Coco appeared to get the tag on the helmet of Eckols. However, the runner was ruled safe and the inning continued. Lamar punched across three runs on two RBI singles and an error to go ahead 5-3.
The Privateers got some early offense off of starter Lance Warren. A run came across when
Reese Kanter singled in Capielano to put the Privateers ahead 1- back in the bottom of the first despite getting no hits in the frame.
In the third, New Orleans took the lead back with an RBI single from
Hezekiah Randolph. On the next batter,
Jonathan Coco ripped a double deep to left to put the Privateers ahead 3-1. Lamar got one run back in the bottom of the frame.
Capielano scored two runs to lead the Privateers on the afternoon. McKigney went five innings and gave up five runs, but only one was earned. McKigney recorded three strikeouts, but also issued three walks and hit two batters.
The Privateers will return home to face Southeastern on Thursday, Apr. 17.
