Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (8-20, 1-10 Southland) continued their struggles at the plate in a 6-1 loss to the Incarnate Word Cardinals (9-19, 3-2) in the front end of a doubleheader on Saturday at Sullivan Field.
The Cardinals struck early for three runs in the second inning. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Jason Stone hit a double to keep the frame alive. Dustin Cole then hit an infield single, and a subsequent throwing error allowed the first run to score. A two-run single by Bryce Shepherd pushed the Cardinals advantage to 3-0.
Shayne LeRouge helped the Privateers punch their only run of the game across. LeRouge doubled to left-center with two outs in the fourth. Zach Reboulet then hit a ground ball to second that went under the glove of Cole into shallow right, and allowed LeRouge to score. However, the Privateers offense halted there as Dylan Boss struck out a season high seven batters in six innings.
Incarnate Word added two runs in the fifth on a Mark Whitehead single. Whitehead has now hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games. The Cardinals closed the scoring in the seventh inning.
Mitchell Cohen intentionally walked Slade Brown to load the bases with two outs, but hit the left-handed Jesse Hoover with the first pitch.
Alex Schaffer picked up the save by closing out the game, and throwing the final three innings while giving up just one hit and one walk. The Cardinals were out-hit 7-6 on the game by the Privateers. Cole scored three runs to lead the Incarnate Word offense.
Nick Halliday (2-3) took the loss while surrendering five runs (three earned) in six innings. Halliday threw a season-high 103 pitches. It marked the seventh time in eight starts that Halliday has gone at least six frames.
