Box Score NATCHITOCHES, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (11-35, 2-25) Southland could not hold an early lead in a 4-2 loss to the Northwestern State Demons (30-21, 18-9) on Sunday at Brown-Stroud Field.
The Privateers were ahead 2-0 heading into the fifth when starter
Daniel Martinez ran into early trouble. A lead-off double by Chase Daughdrill started a four-run inning that put the Demons ahead for the first time on the afternoon. After the bases were loaded with one out, Joel Atkinson delivered an RBI single that chased Martinez after 4.1 innings.
Darron McKigney came in and got a pop out for the second out of the frame. Then a wild pitch allowed the tying run to cross. Caleb Dugas delivered a two-run single to put Northwestern State up 4-2 while the final out was recorded on the base paths as Bret Underwood was thrown out trying to go from first to third.
New Orleans grabbed a 2-0 lead off of Demons starter Steven Spann after the first inning. With two outs,
Samuel Capielano was hit by a pitch.
Reese Kanter sliced a double to left that went past the reach of Cort Brinson to drive in the first run.
Hezekiah Randolph followed with an RBI single. Spann lasted just 2.0 innings in his start on the mound.
Austin Tanner came on in relief of Spann and held the Privateers scoreless while allowing just one hit in 6.0 innings of work. Tanner only allowed one other base runner, conceding a lead-off walk to Zach Reboulet in the eighth. Cameron Brewer came in and got the save. After allowing a lead-off single to Capielano, Brewer retired the next three batters in order.
Capielano led the way at the plate with a 2-for-3 day, and scored one of the Privateers' two runs. New Orleans was held to just two hits after their two-run first inning. Martinez took the loss, giving up four runs in 4.1 innings.
The Demons got two-hit days from Daughdrill and C.J. Webster. Dugas went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Northwestern State has now won eight of nine Southland series, and Sunday capped off their second sweep of a Southland opponent.
New Orleans will finish the season with their final series at home against Central Arkansas. The three-game set starts Thursday with a 6:30 first pitch.
