NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (3-4, 0-1) looks to snap a three-match skid as they host a doubleheader against the Southern Jaguars (1-6) and the Xavier Gold Nuggets (4-3) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
The Privateers have encountered a tough stretch that has comprised the last two weeks. A narrow loss to Louisiana-Monroe was followed by a conference loss at Abilene Christian. Most recently, New Orleans battled in a couple of spots, but fell to LSU.
Soledad Calderon Arroyo came up with the Privateers' only point against LSU on Wednesday winning her match by retirement after taking the first set. Calderon, along with
Marta Sans was ahead 4-2 in the #1 doubles match, which went unfinished.
The back half of the Privateers' rotation has been solid individually in singles.
Anna Segarra Rius,
Yasmine Rashad, and
Hafsa Laraibi have combined to go 12-5 in singles on the spring while playing at the 4, 5, and 6 spots respectively.
New Orleans has not lost a match against either opponent they will face on Saturday. The Privateers are 9-0 against Southern and 10-0 against Xavier. Saturday will mark the first meeting with Southern since the 2010 spring season.
Southern has lost six straight since opening the spring with a 4-3 victory over Southland foe, McNeese State. The Jaguars' most recent outing was a 7-0 loss to Southern Miss last Saturday.
Xavier is coming off a 4-3 victory against William Carey last Saturday. All three losses in the spring have come to D-I schools (Tulane, Nicholls, Louisiana-Lafayette). Nour Abbes comes in with a career singles record of 34-1 and won the NAIA singles championship last year.
The Privateers' match against Southern will take place at 11 a.m. and the tussle with Xavier will follow at 3 p.m.
