BOX SCORENEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (7-5, 1-2) swept the doubles matches in
Yasmine Rashad's return and held up solidly in singles to grab their first conference victory by a 5-2 count over the Lamar Lady Cardinals (3-5, 0-1) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
Marta Sans and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo started the day by breezing to an 8-2 at the 1 position in doubles.
Anja Luethi and
Anna Segarra Rius capped off the first point of the day in the Privateers' favor by an 8-6 margin. The third doubles match went unfinished with New Orleans leading 6-5.
In singles, the Privateers landed on the winning side in two of the three matches that went three sets. Calderon and Segarra each recovered from dropping the first set in their respective matches to earn singles wins at the 1 and 4 positons respectively.
Sans also outlasted Andrea Ivanovic at the 3 spot. After breezing to a 6-2 decision in the first set, Sans was extended into a tiebreak in the second set that she won.
Hafsa Laraibi also provided a singles win, coasting to a 6-1, 6-1 decision.
The Privateers will face Sam Houston State on Sunday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
