Privateers Host Jackson State on Wednesday

THE GAME:
The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (12-26, 3-15 Southland) will face their seventh game against a SWAC opponent when they tangle with the Jackson State Tigers (25-15, 12-6 SWAC) on Wednesday at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
 
The Privateers took one of three games on the weekend against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The series finale was a 2-0 victory and marked the second time New Orleans shut out an opponent. The first occurrence was on Feb. 20 against Alcorn State. The Privateers did not draw a walk in the series, and have drawn the fewest free passes (88) in the Southland to date.
 
Jackson State had a four-game winning streak snapped on Monday in the series finale as they fell 14-3 to Alabama A&M. The Tigers are currently leading the conference in runs scored (316) and walks drawn (178). Jackson State's pitching staff currently has an ERA at 6.03 which stands sixth in the SWAC.
 
The Tigers are hitting .312 and have four regulars who are hitting over .300 on the season. Melvin Rodriguez leads the way with a .438 batting average. Rodriguez was a pre-season First Team SWAC selection. Coach Omar Johnson has guided Jackson State to four 30-plus win seasons including a 32-win season in 2014.

NEWS AND NOTES:
CLEAN YOUR PLATE:
Shawn Semple has been the starter for both Privateer shutouts this season after throwing a complete game shutout on Sunday. Semple was named Southland Pitcher of the Week and collegesportsmadness.com Southland Player of the Week after limiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to four hits while recording five strikeouts in a 2-0 win.
 
HOT CORNER:
Parker Jones has played sound defense of late at third for the Privateers, committing just two errors in his last 50 chances. On Sunday, Jones had four assists, marking the third time in the last four games Jones had at least four assists in the field.
 
MARSH LANDS:
Preston Marsh has bumped his batting average up 66 points over the last 15 games from .209 to .275. In that span, Marsh has collected a hit in 13 contests. Over the weekend against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Marsh went 6-for-12 at the plate.
