BEAUMONT, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team will continue their run in the conference tournament on Saturday morning when they take on the 3-seed Northwestern State Lady Demons. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
The Privateers made the biggest splash becoming the only lower seed to win in the first round of the tournament. New Orleans lasted through a grueling five-hour match to defeat 2-seed, Stephen F. Austin 4-3.
Anna Segarra Rius clinched the final point and the match for the Privateers.
New Orleans got wins from the 3 through 6 positions in singles after losing a hard fought doubles point. Segarra,
Anja Luethi,
Yasmine Rashad, and
Hafsa Laraibi provided the victories for the Privateers who have now won five of their last six matches.
The Privateers met Northwestern State on Apr. 3 in New Orleans and lost a close match by a 4-3 count. New Orleans swept the back three matches in singles, but a three-set match at #3 singles that went in Northwestern State's favor decided the dual.
Northwestern State is a year removed from reaching the Southland finals. Tatiana Larina and Natalya Krutova have spearheaded the Lady Demons in doubles. Larina and Krutova were nationally ranked during the season in doubles and finished a perfect 11-0 in the regular season.
