BOX SCORE
NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (1-0) took advantage of a short-handed Loyola Wolfpack squad (0-1) and freshmen,
Trang Dao,
Brittany Johnson, and
Paula Garriga Ullate played a pivotal role on the way to a 7-0 victory on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
Â
Loyola only had five players available so there were only two doubles matches to be played. Both remaining pairs swept at 6-0 as
Anja Luethi and Dao won 6-0 at #1 doubles. Johnson and Garriga made their doubles debut as Privateers and also coasted to a 6-0 victory at #2 doubles.
Â
"They went out there and got the job done. I wanted our new players to get experience. It was a good match for us and we started off on the right note. We continued the momentum from the doubles point to the singles," said Coach
Burzis Kanga.
Â
In singles, the Privateers nearly had a perfect outing. Four of five singles matches finished at 6-0, 6-0. Johnson, Segarra, Luethi, Garriga, and
Yasmine Rashad all notched victories in singles on the afternoon to cap off the season opener in short order.
Â
"I wanted the freshmen to play this match to get their feet wet and to build confidence. These kind of matches really can propel you especially when you start off. I couldn't be prouder of them and they were methodical," said Kanga.
Â
Friday marked the fourth win for the Privateers against Loyola since 2010. New Orleans has won all but one match in that span.
Â
The women will next take on Southern at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
