NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (3-0) got out to a strong start in doubles and once again pulled off a 7-0 sweep, this time over the Jackson State Lady Tigers (1-3) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
Â
Trang Dao and
Anja Luethi responded from dropping the first game in their doubles match in resounding fashion. Dao executed a drop shot to help the tandem hold serve. The duo pounced from there, seizing control in a 6-2 win.
Â
The Privateers finished off the doubles point in their favor with the freshman tandem of
Brittany Johnson and
Paula Garriga Ullate who raced out to an early 3-0 lead and remained in command on their way to a 6-2 victory.
Â
"It started with the doubles point and some of the matches were routine," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "Sometimes we play in that comfort zone for the opponent and we need to have more variance. Anna played a solid player and she pulled through."
Â
The singles matches were routine for most. Dao had an early break of serve in the first set, continuing her momentum from doubles and was the first to finish at 6-1, 6-0. With the victory, she has won her first four matches between singles and doubles.
Â
Luethi put forth a clean sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the #3 spot in singles. This season, Luethi is 3-0 out of the gate with all wins coming in straight sets. Luethi has only lost two games during those three matches.
Â
Hafsa Laraibi quickly bounced back from losing the first game of the opening set to dominate at #5. Soleadad Calderon Arroyo and
Yasmine Rashad also turned in straight set victories. The sweep was completed when
Anna Segarra Rius outlasted Julie Angermann in a tiebreak in the first set before wrapping up the second set at 6-2.
Â
The Privateers will next face Alcorn State on Saturday, Feb. 13 at home. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
