Rashad, Johnson Pick Up Singles Wins in Women's Tennis Loss to Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La.
– Yasmine Rashad and Brittany Johnson picked up singles wins, but the University of New Orleans women's tennis team (8-3, 4-2 Southland) fell 5-2 to the Northwestern State Lady Demons (6-9, 2-3) on Friday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
 
The Lady Demons swept the board at the top two spots in doubles. Natalya Krutova and Polina Ivanova won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles while Polina Mutel and Iryna Vardanian mimicked their teammates with a similar score line at No. 2 to give Northwestern State the first point of the day.
 
In singles, Johnson earned the first point for the Privateers. Playing at No. 5 in the rotation, Johnson took home a straight set victory, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Barbora Kollarova. That pulled UNO to within 3-1, but Northwestern State was able to clinch the match at the No. 3 spot as Mutel delivered a 7-5, 6-4 win for the Lady Demons.
 
Rashad's match was the last to finish on the day. After winning a tiebreak in the first set, Rashad lost the second set 6-3 to Alzbeta Veverkova. Rashad came up with a 10-3 victory in the deciding third set though to run her singles record to 6-3 on the season.
 
Another marathon match commenced at No. 2 singles with Soledad Calderon Arroyo and Vardanian of Northwestern State. Calderon lost the first set in a tiebreak then won the second 7-5, but Vardanian took the third set 10-8.
 
The Privateers will take on Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
