NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (14-5) will play the final match of the season and will honor two seniors on Monday as they face the Xavier Gold Nuggets (8-12). The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at the University Tennis Center.
Soledad Calderon Arroyo and
Hafsa Laraibi will be playing their final matches in front of a home crowd. Calderon is a four-year letter winner who came to the Privateers from Spain. Laraibi transferred from South Dakota and has been with UNO for three seasons.
Both have had numerous highlights throughout their collegiate careers. Calderon led UNO in singles victories in her freshman and sophomore season. Calderon has racked up 47 career spring singles victories and earned All-Southland, All-LSWA, and Conference All-Academic honors during her time on the Lakefront.
Laraibi has been a strong presence in the Privateers' rotation in singles and doubles. As a junior, Laraibi won 20 matches in the spring, becoming the first Privateer women's tennis player in 15 years to achieve that mark. In the fall of her junior season, Laraibi won the doubles championship along with teammate,
Yasmine Rashad at the Big Easy Classic. In her senior year, Laraibi has played three different spots in the rotation and has a 12-6 mark.
The Privateers are locked in as the five seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament. Their first round opponent will be McNeese State whom they defeated a week ago.
Xavier enters having lost three straight matches to Southern, Jackson State, and Alcorn State. The Gold Nuggets' last victory was a 6-3 decision over Prairie View A&M. Xavier is 0-1 against Southland schools after suffering a 4-0 defeat earlier in the year to Nicholls.
