BOX SCORE
HAMMOND, La. – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (11-4, 5-3 Southland) turned back a late rally and edged their way to a 4-3 win over the Southeastern Lady Lions (11-7, 5-4) on Sunday afternoon at the SLU Tennis Complex.
Â
It was
Trang Dao who again delivered the match clinching point as she did against Central Arkansas. Dao won a long first set over Lucia Bustamante 7-5. The second set went Bustamante's way at 6-4 setting up a dramatic third set for the match. Dao took home the victory, winning the third set 6-4 to vault the Privateers past Southeastern in the Southland standings.
Â
The Privateers collected the first three points of the afternoon. UNO won the doubles point, rebounding from a loss at No. 1 doubles.
Anja Luethi and Dao posted a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. Then,
Hafsa Laraibi and
Yasmine Rashad won by the same score at No. 3 to put UNO ahead 1-0.
Â
Laraibi and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo cruised at their respective singles matches. Laraibi ran out to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Natalie Duran and Calderon dominated Dalina Dahlmans 6-2, 6-0 to push the Privateers to the brink of victory.
Â
That's when Southeastern ripped off three straight wins including a three-set win at No. 1. Renee Villarreal came back from losing the first set to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-1, which set the stage for the match at No. 4 singles that UNO was ultimately able to take.
Â
