NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (12-4, 5-3 Southland) has already locked a spot in the Southland tournament. Now, the Privateers turn their attention to seeding in a two-match weekend at Nicholls on Friday and vs. McNeese State on Sunday.
The Privateers are currently the 3-seed in the tournament with three conference matches left. UNO pulled off a win against a ranked opponent in non-conference action on Tuesday when they defeated Louisiana Tech 4-2. The Privateers won the doubles point and got singles wins from
Anja Luethi,
Yasmine Rashad, and
Hafsa Laraibi.
Laraibi made it to the double digit win mark on Tuesday with her match clinching point. On the season, Laraibi is 10-4 and has played between the No. 4, 5, and 6 spot in the rotation. Laraibi's highest win total is six at No. 5 singles.
Also at 10 wins is
Trang Dao who has won three straight. Dao has been nearly unbeatable at No. 4 singles, posting a 9-1 mark on the year. In conference matches, Dao is 5-3 and in doubles, she has partnered with Luethi for an 8-2 mark while playing mostly at the top spot in the rotation.
Nicholls (6-15, 1-7 Southland) has been eliminated from contention for the conference tournament. The Colonels have been without defending Southland Player of the Year, Stephanie Barnett since early February. Nicholls has lost five straight since their last win, a 4-1 decision over Louisiana-Lafayette. Isla Brock and Julia Melendez co-lead the team in singles victories with nine.
McNeese State (13-7, 6-3) currently has a hold on the 2-seed in the tournament. The Cowgirls have gone through a rough patch against a tough stretch of opponents, losing three of their last four to Abilene Christian, Northwestern State, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Cowgirls will play Southeastern on Saturday before making the trip to New Orleans. Hannah Brett is 17-3 this spring and has a 9-0 conference mark.
